Why is the HD (maxres) thumbnail missing for some videos?
YouTube only stores a maxresdefault (1280×720) image when the uploader added a high-resolution custom thumbnail. Older videos, Shorts, or auto-generated thumbnails may not have it. When that happens, use the Standard Definition or High Quality versions, which are available for virtually every public video.
Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?
